The growth of digital technology has increased at the level where there is a greater demand for learning basic skills than ever before. More and more people are enrolling in basic, intermediate, and advanced computer science courses at various venues to learn a new skill or embellish current ones. The job market is now tapered to the learning of basic skills that are essential to obtaining and keeping a job, or even being a successful student. For the most part, teaching computer science is not as hard as it could be. The basic premise of learning computer science is to obtain the basic set of skills that can be easily transferable to learning new applications, and programs. It is impossible to teach every thing about computer science, and is very frustrating to even try.

The basic premise in teaching computer science is to introduce the basics, and allow everyone to become comfortable with the equipment. For many people, they have to overcome the feel and the presence of the machine itself. Presenting the computer as a resource to retrieve information is a better teaching modality than explaining how it really works in technical terms. It is by far more effective to teach students what they really need to know. Keyboarding, information research and retrieval, and how to navigate websites are more important than the rudiments of what makes up the insides of the computer or the programming end of the application. When those things are taught, the students become more confident in their personal ability to learn other things such as Microsoft or HTML.

The bigger job is to allow the students to see how each application is useful to them and let them build a personal arsenal of what is working for them. The more ambitious students will learn more, but everyone will have a working set of basic skills that will allow them to succeed. Mission accomplished.
